ABOUT THE PROJECT
The PLSLWD needs more eyes and ears out in the lake watersheds to help us keep an eye on the carp! By being our “carp spies”, volunteers will play a key part in better identifying carp groups, migration routes, and spawning areas. The PLSLWD will then have more opportunities to remove the carp from our lakes and block them from spawning grounds. Check out this map of locations carp are often spotted for ideas of where to start looking for carp.
WAYS YOU CAN HELP
Do you live on or near a lake, wetland or stream? Let us know if/when you see carp by filling out this short form. On the form you can report basic information about your carp sighting, upload any photos and mark the location on a map.
Spawning: When carp spawn in May and June, you would likely see fish splashing around in shallow areas of a waterbody. No other fish is quite as obvious during spawning. For an example of what this looks like click here.
Migration: You might also see them “stacking up” near a culvert or moving in large groups moving upstream through a channel in the springtime. Click here for an example of what carp migration in the spring looks like.
Groups/Clusters: In the open water season, you might see a large group of carp “hanging out.” Contact us and let us know about what you’re seeing!
WHAT TO EXPECT
Volunteers can sign up for a specific season that they will keep an eye out for carp. There is no set time commitment, but the more observations the better. To easily report carp locations, fill out this short reporting form (https://carp-espionage-plslwd.hub.arcgis.com/) from your computer, phone or tablet. Quick calls or emails are also appreciated!
TIMEFRAME
Open water season, April to November
